Thanks to Jess and Luthando for a Techno Teach-In I won't soon forget. Listening to some Austrailian(?) guy with a heavy metal looking avatar singing the Blues for our class was both hilarious and pretty astounding. The way that the technology has advanced, and how it connects people in ways that you couldn't ever have imagined before this really blows your mind.
I also hope the discussion on Critical Media Literacy has your brains twirling away. I really believe that this is an important issue, and our approach as educators to it is extremely vital to how an entire generation will perceive media. Teaching kids to 'read' the media and imagery that they're bombarded with 24-7 is a step in their becoming informed and active citizens rather than empty vessels and mindless drones.
Looking forward to everyone's personal essay videos this week. If anyone has any questions or needs any help, please give a shout!

Seriously, that blew my mind too. I felt oddly uncomfortable but also super interested. I am regretting that I didn't pull my little flip video camera out, because the experience plus all our reactions to it were hilarious, and since thinking about video more lately because of our personal essay assignment, I am really inspired to whip out the camera more often.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am excited to share our personal essay videos too. Mine was super fun to make!!
Remember how I was so excited to go home and try it out after experiencing Second Life in class just to see what else could happen. Well, I realized that it was not as fun as it was sitting all together while Luthando and Jessica helped guide an exploration of this virtual world. I think I lasted for about three minutes before I lost interest. I think our Australian guy really gave us a unique show that will never be repeated, unless you guys all want to go visit him again on Tuesday. Just Kidding.
ReplyDeleteI love Angus, and his rendition of Lady by Kenny Rogers moved me. He was also so NICE. genuinely nice and helpful. I have faith in all my classmates, but that techno teach-in will be really hard to top.
ReplyDeleteIt is strange how such a physically removed experience like Second life was really emotional for me: funny, exciting, kind... It also really galvanized the class as a group.
